How it works

What this is

Launch Control trains judgment aligned with the CPMAI methodology, the PMI-CPMAI™ Exam Content Outline domains and the sources cited below: given where an AI project is, what should the project manager do next? It is practice material. It makes no claim of exam readiness or predictive validity. Every item is written from PMI's Exam Content Outline (Sept 2025), the PMI-CPMAI Workbook (July 2025), the CPMAI Glossary, and the seven course modules. None of it is reconstructed from real exam questions.

The seven games

  • Sort Rush — 60 seconds. A task appears; tap the CPMAI phase it belongs to. Every correct placement scores +10; consecutive correct answers build a practice streak for feedback only. Trains phase placement, including the Data Understanding vs. Data Preparation distinction, a line worth practicing.
  • Pattern Spotter — ten use cases, seven pattern pads. Trains mapping a business problem to one of the Seven Patterns of AI. Classify the user-facing function, not the technology underneath.
  • Next Move — a scenario and four options. Pick the best next step. Afterwards every wrong option is tagged premature, wrong phase, skips a gate, or unsupported / off-target. The tags help you recognize common situational reasoning traps: acting too early, working in the wrong phase, or skipping a gate.
  • Go / No-Go Boardroom — a short business case. Rate all nine feasibility factors (three business, three data, three execution) Go, Maybe, or No-Go, then present to the board and read the reasoning.
  • Risk & Mitigation (Shield Protocol) — read an AI-project risk and choose the PM control that best addresses it. After each answer, Launch Control shows the harm, its consequence, the appropriate control, and where that control belongs in the CPMAI lifecycle. Wrong options are tagged partial control, premature / wrong timing, or unsupported / off-target. Each correct answer charges one segment of the Risk Shield; this mode never touches run integrity. Since v2.1, four validated Risk & Mitigation scenarios appear in every Boss Run.
  • Metric Triage (Telemetry) — a short operational scenario and the model's result. Choose the measure or decision that should drive the call: which error costs more, whether accuracy is misleading, whether a Phase I threshold is met, whether the business KPI moved. After each answer you see the business consequence, the error that matters, the metric, why, and the decision. Wrong options are tagged misleading here, secondary, or off-target. Each correct answer locks one telemetry channel. Run integrity is untouched, and Boss Run does not yet draw from these items.
  • Boss Run — 20 mixed questions at a timed practice pace of 80 seconds each: 6 Sort Rush, 5 Pattern Spotter, 5 Next Move and 4 Risk & Mitigation. Each correct answer takes a segment off DRIFT-9. 16 of 20 defeats the boss and earns the Boss Slayer patch. That 80% target is Launch Control's practice bar; PMI does not publish a passing score.

Progression

  • XP and rank. Every correct answer earns XP. Ranks run from Data Intern to CPMAI Boss, and the rocket on the trajectory moves with you: Launch Pad → Liftoff → Upper Atmosphere → Low Orbit → High Orbit → Deep Space → Mission Command.
  • Run integrity. Correct answers restore it a little; wrong answers cost it. In Next Move the cost depends on the kind of mistake: skipping a gate costs most, an off-target guess costs least. It can reach zero, but nothing ends; it is feedback on your run, never a statement about a model.
  • Practice Progress. Each phase, each pattern, Risk & Mitigation, and Metric Triage fills in as you answer correctly about it: ○ under 5 correct, ◐ 5–14, ● 15+. These are counts of correct answers you have been exposed to, not a measure of mastery, retention, or exam readiness.
  • Mission patches. Nine achievements with fixed criteria. Locked patches stay visible so you know what is left to earn.
  • Hot streaks. Consecutive correct answers in a session trigger Systems Nominal (3), Launch Window Open (5) and Orbit Achieved (10). They report real performance only.

Study tip

Play Sort Rush and Pattern Spotter until both Practice Progress rows are mostly filled, then live in Next Move, the Boardroom, Shield Protocol, and Telemetry. Notice which distractor tag you fall for most; that is the category to study in the cheat sheet.
